Abstract

Keynote Address at IHEAC Conference, Perth, September 2006.
Abstract:
Against the stark background of current media coverage of the realities of life in many Indigenous communities, this paper considers the current state of Indigenous education and raises questions about what the future holds for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students across all sectors of education.
In this paper, critical elements of what makes education and training work for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students, will be discussed and the presenter will highlight what educational institutions and educators need
to acknowledge and accept if the contemporary focus on the three p’s— partnerships, pathways and policies—is to provide real hope or simply create illusions around Indigenous educational achievement in this country.
